zsart KunstRaum and the Province of Lower Austria celebrate the International Year of Forests 2011
21.1.2011 - 8.3.2011
It is with great pleasure that we take the opportunity of the declaration of the International Year of Forests and celebrate it with an exhibition of international visual artists.
From 30 international submissions, a team of curators (Barbara Baum, Artistic Director Strabag Kunstforum Vienna; Anna Spohn, Vienna University of Applied Arts; Nina Schedlmayer, art critic; Andreas Stalzer, Gallery Stalzer; Reinhard Hagen, Lower Austrian Forestry Service as representative of the forestry industry) selected 14 concepts, which were implemented by the artists specifically for this exhibition with the aim of celebrating the Year of Forests.
The presented works are sculptures, paintings, photographs, installations, video works by
Beni Altmüller, Heinz Baumüller, Wolfgang Georgsdorf, Anselm Glück, Elisabeth Homar-Zogmayer, Andreas Kattner, Maria Maier, Brigitte Pamperl, Gunda Timmel-Reitter, Stefan Sakic, Robert Staudinger, Marika Vicari, Guido Zehetbauer-Salzer and Leo Zogmayer.
Forests indeed have a value for us that is vital for survival. They not only supply us with fresh air, bind carbon dioxide, store moisture, provide refuge to floral and faunal fellow inhabitants, but they also nourish our soul with their peaceful variety of forms and blaze of colours. Art can make clear statements about this theme precisely because man’s greed for profit and the resulting global warming continually decimate our valuable refuge although we would need ever more of it to survive. Our goal is to initiate a positive sentiment for sustainable forest awareness through constructive criticism. An awareness that also motivates people to take more care in their urban daily routine.
Stephan Pernkopf, Member of the Provincial Government:
“The year 2011 was declared the International Year of Forests by the United Nations (UN). This aims to raise the general public’s awareness of the extraordinary importance of the forest’s ecosystem. The densely wooded federal province of Lower Austria, some 40% of which is forest, has planned various activities as part of the Year of Forests. Its support of the cultural project of zsart KunstRaum together with renowned artists, is a major undertaking to raise awareness of the topic of forests, forestry and the raw material wood especially among the general public who do not usually come into contact with this theme, thus creating a symbiosis between nature and culture.
Particularly in times of climate protection it is immensely important to focus on the extremely valuable living space of forests to ensure that the significance of its functions for all mankind is clearly at the forefront of our thinking. All these are good reasons for the Provincial Government of Lower Austria to provide relevant support and funds for this important event, in the framework of which different artists deal with the theme of forests and wood.”
After the presentation at zsart KunstRaum this exhibition will move to Lower Austria.
