01/10 pop goes my world
by CX Huth
January 22 - March 27, 2010

Prenzlauer Berg, in front of one of the worn up houses you see a car, model: Citroën CX, in a permanently improvised patchwork-apartment a collection of weird plastic figures from all over the world: That’s the place where Christian aka CX Huth lives. CX Huth, who plays the bass guitar and the keyboard, listens to pop music, writes colourful books, who draws, paints, scratches, glues and prints pictures – on (almost) everything. Who calls into question without opposing everything.

At the beginning of the Eighties CX Huth arrives in Berlin, where he attends the private drawing and painting classes of Lothar Böhme and Wolfgang Leber, two main characters of the „Berlin school“. In the Nineties CX Huths is co-founder of an avantguarde cartoonists group called „Renate“. The journalist Jörg Böckem writes: „Eccentrics look for their niches, from where to observe the world and pursue their odd interests.“ The niches of the likeable, „eccentric“ CX Huth are punk, pop and comic strips, are colourful, loud, idealistic, unpretentious.

CX Huth who names Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jean Dubuffet and David Hockney his idols observes the world with humour and childish wisdom, tells stories and creates characters. And that is exactly what this experienced author and illustrator of children’s books for adults („Hasenhäschen – nur für Gute“, „Das 23 fünf acht neun“, „Le petit fonte“, „Käthe und Kruse“) does when he paints and draws. His turbulent tales with their open ends enthral the public. Little mishaps, spelling mistakes, accidents like tears, stains, creases and their relevant corrections give the impression of a piece of art which is constantly growing and evolving. Thanks to these „imperfections“ the works’ fantastic, fancy turmoil remains nonetheless connected to real everyday life.

After shows in Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Portugal ZS art is glad to introduce CX Huth for the first time to the Austrian public. According to the artist’s empathic, enthralling values the current show „pop goes my world“ is a plea for a vibrant and sustainable co-existance. Since: All of us, we can be and should be as we are.
