04/10 We are floating in the air
by Eduardo Vega de Seoane (paintings) & Max Nagl (music)
April 8 - May 29, 2010

Zero gravity and freedom are in the air of Eduardo Vega de Seoane’s paintings. The title of the Spanish painter’s first show in Austria immediatly induces daydreams: we are floating in the air. But on the other hand this sentence describes the painter’s inner state during the working process: „I see my brush like the clouds in the sky creating different shapes.“ Vega de Seoane definitely is the creator of his very own heaven.

Each painting is a harmonic universe without centre where each single element finds its equal place inviting the beholder to autonomously dream the painter’s world on – beyond the limitations of canvas.

Compared to the dominant, expressive colours of his earlier paintings Eduardo Vega de Seoane enhances in his recent works („aerial“, „soul“, „acrobacy“,...) symbolics and language. Form and colour become the equal allies of his aerial shapes. Vega de Seoane’s main subject – air – is the material breath, life, a saxophone’s sound are made of... According to this understanding of art the Austrian sax player Max Nagl performs a dedicated new composition live at the occasion of the show’s opening reception. Throughout the entire duration of the exhibition a CD with Max Nagl’s swinging instrument will provide Vega de Seoane’s exhilarating word-pictures with additional spherical sensuousness.

Eduardo Vega de Seoane, born 1955 in Madrid, is often referred to as an abstract expressionist. But he firmly objects to any categorization of his work: „What interests me is free painting, figurative or abstract are limits too rigid to me. In my paintings you can find writings, shapes that you can more or less recognize together with stains of colour becoming part of an unity.“

Like Vega de Seoane who stays independent of well-intentioned art therory as a painter, the beholders too are completely free in their reception. Hence the unsolved tension between abstract and representational elements requires the open-mindedness, sensitivity and creativity of the beholder’s eye. Eduardo Vega de Seoane’s spirit and atmospheres offer to anyone of us an „aerial space“ for personal experience.
